About two years ago, I put an Optima yellowtop in my car. Yesterday, it completely shat itself in the middle of cranking. I got a jump and it didn’t have even have enough to keep the car running once I put it in gear and tried to start moving. Did some tests and it’s totally ruined.
Problem is I’ve lost the receipt and have no idea where I bought it from. If I can’t get any money for it, I really don’t want to spend $250 on a battery that will do this to me again. I’m considering just throwing in a duralast gold or something at half the cost.
I never abused it or discharged it fully or left it sitting for more than a few days or anything like that. I hear Optima’s quality went down the shitter a few years ago. Did I get bit by that?

I’ve heard nothing good about Optima in the past few years. Premium price for shit quality.

Nah, that’s good. I threw in an old wheelchair battery (which is apparently nearly identical to a group 51R) and drove 15 miles home with no warning lights or issues. I’m pretty convinced the Optima is shorted internally.

I had a couple red tops years ago that were like that. Then I got a yellow and haven’t used it in years, until I put it in my kids powerwheels. After putting it in the battery tender over night it seemed fully charged.
I am suprised this one hasn’t shit itself being it maybe 10 years old. I have also used it to jump start cars since it’s just sitting around not in the Jeep.

Exactly what I’ve heard and seen. We get used cars in at work where we replace about 10 Optima batteries a year. They often look like they are almost new, when the techs bring in the core.

This is anecdotal at best and is in no way a test of the charging system. Charging systems don’t have to fail in such a way that they produce no voltage/amperage whatsoever. A proper test is in order.
